  • Sun Valley

So...dad and I went up to Sun Valley yesterday for on outing.  We forgot our camera.  Shoot!

It was beautiful up there, with mostly sunny conditions and lots  of snow.  Really a gorgeous day!  We had lunch in a downtown eatery.   As we were looking for places to eat, we were struck with how many establishments are closed up there.  Many have for sale signs on and others just are empty.   The economy downturn has hit the rich and famous' area as well.

After eating a delicious burger and shake, we drove to one of the ski areas and walked around.  We debated spending $20.00 each to ride a gondola half way up the mountain to the Round House Restaurant, but decided against it.  We sat and watched people ski awhile.   Then we went to Ketchum and drove around a bit, then up to Sun Valley village and walked around there.  There were a few fun ice sculptures there.  The Sun which is Sun Valley's logo, was sculpted and fun.  And there was an amazing horse, a Santa Sleigh, and a  Christmas tree.  Not many people were there!  But after deciding that the economy was to blame, well, today I just read in the paper that Sun Valley ski area is having their best year in numerous years.  So much for that theory.  Guess it was just a slow Wednesday, is all.

Then we went to another ski area.  We actually took a brief nap in the car before getting out.  It was sunny, so it was warm in our car.  Then we noticed a guy with a parachute floating down to the parking lot, parasailing from the top of the lift.  He then quickly crammed  his parachute into a back pack and headed up to get on a lift.  We saw him do that 3 times from the top of the lift.  Each time he would land perfectly in the parking lot near his car.  As we were getting ready to leave, we were close enough to him to talk to him.  I told him that he was wonderful entertainment to us and thank you.  He said he had also done the Perrine Bridge probably over 100 times too, and had done this same thing in Utah too.  He worked nights and would come here nearly every day to do this.  He said it was a blast.  Very  interesting!  And fun to watch.

We then headed down.   A fun day!

  • BSU game and 9 mile hike!

We had all our "kids" home for the weekend.  We sure enjoyed it a lot!

The day 3 of them arrived, we went golfing up in Gooding.

On Saturday we went to the BSU game, which is the reason the kids came in the first place.  happy

Folks really get into the spirit of the game and really dress up in fun ways for the event!  It's fun!

On Sunday we drove up to Stanley and hiked 9 miles, with a 2,000 foot elevation gain.  I can't believe we did it!  I'm definitely glad we did it, but it was hard!  Not on the kids, but on us parents!

On the way up, we had excellent views of Iron Creek.  Here and there we saw red and yellow leaves of autumn. Lodge pole pine trees lines the paths for awhile.  Tne the trail climbed steeply up the mountain side.

Alpine Lake, the first of 3 lakes we saw.  After leaving Alpine Lake, the trail again climbed steeply via a series of switch backs, with spectacular views of the Alpine lake and the eastern wall of the Sawtooth Range.

We finally arrived!  The first view of Sawtooth Lake was impressive - with rocky shores and towering peaks. It was quite cool/cold at this elevation.  But we stopped long enough to eat our lunches and enjoy the view.

We sat on these logs to eat.

After a roundtrip of around 9 miles, we made our way back to the trailhead and piled our tired muscles into the car.  Ahhhh!  But it was sure a wonderful day spent in Gods awesome creation!  God is sooooo good to us!

  • Summer 2010

      !

We've been having a few thunder storms and had a rainbow to accompany it.

We got back today from  Redfish.  On Saturday, A & S took their inflatable raft and took it in the lake for a bit.  The water was surprisingly warm!  Well...for Redfish anyway!

Dad and Aaron and Dillon played a little frisbee.  A beautiful day!

                                                                                      Mount Heyburn behind dad.

The water was warm enough to sit in,  even for Bailey!

                                                                                                 A fun weekend!

  • Camping...and a big fire!

We went camping this week.  The above picture shows us heading up 4th of July Lake trail.

We arrived!  Lots of mosquitoes. We weren't able to stand still for long.

John & Rhonda came along with us.  We had a lot of fun with them.

This next picture is fuzzy, but hopefully will give you a bit of an idea of how beautiful it was with so many wild  flowers.

A view from the boat of the mountains by Redfish Lake

He caught one!  And released it.

Yesterday we had a fire just to the south of us in the canyon.  We saw it's beginnings just as we were coming home from our camping trip.  Here's what it looked like as we were coming home a mile or so from our house.

It quickly exploded.  It was quite windy, and the wind fanned the flames. This was taken from our back porch.

    It traveled east.

We jumped into the car after awhile to go see what we could see.  They had the road blocked where we walk the canyon.  But we found another road just west of that.  The canyon floor was all consumed.  But it was all on the south side, or the Twin Falls side.  Nothing was on "our" side.

After awhile, they got a helicopter and 2 water planes to drop water.  Here's the helicopter landing to get refueled.  You can see the jet fuel truck parked in the field behind our house.

It was an exciting few hours watching this thing.

  • I said "Goodbye" to my little blue car last week.  So I had to take pictures of it to help me remember it.  It served us well, and all the kids at one time or another took it to either school or work or just to transport them someplace.  It even went to CA once.  Then later on, it's been my work car.  It's a 1993, we got it in 1996, and at the time of the sale, it had nearly 200,000 miles on it.  Yes, indeed, we got a lot of use of it!

We had a work day the weekend of the 4th of July here with Eileen and Aaron and Serena and Dillon helping change some of the stuff out front.  Thanks to all of them for the much needed help!

The next pictures are from our family reunion in Sun River, Oregon.  What a wonderful time, despite the sickness that traveled through many of the attendees.  Perhaps the biggest "hit" was the newest additions to the family, sweet Brenna and sweet Bailey.

    Grandpa loving being a Grandpa!

One day we went to visit a mile long cave that you can walk through.  It was fun.

It was interesting to notice the temperatures cool down as we approached the entrance.  The cave is a constant 42 degrees.

Two little spelunkers.  They each had a little flashlight too!

Spending time at the vacation house was fun too, with game playing, cooking, and just hanging around visiting.

We celebrated Ron's birthday while we were there with a birthday blueberry pie.  Delicious!

    Great Grandma time!

Another day we went to the High Desert Museum.  It was a very interesting place with lots to see and experience, including a couple of nature walks, neat animals, including an animal "show", and an old cabin and saw mill and old time town that the kids could experience helping wash the clothes with a wash board, etc.  Fun day!

In the animal show, among the animals, was a porcupine.  Got a close view of him.

Abee and Dillon had fun doing "chores" at the old fashioned cabin.

More "hanging out" at the vacation house.

    Babies looking cute!

Grandma loving time spent with all her grandchildren!!

The last day together we took a drive up to the nearby mountains and had a picnic...and posed for some pictures.

Lots of photographing taking place.  It was a beautiful day with beautiful scenery.

Resting/relaxing in front of a Clifford video.  Ahh!

  • 3000 Miles to Alaska

    Alaska2010 150

On May15, 2010, Steve and I began a trip that neither one of us had any idea what lay ahead of us. One's perception of distance can be influenced by the short distance on a map between point A and point B. Steve and I got schooled in inches on a map to say the least. What we learned in four days was both spacial and spiritual. I won't speak for Steve, but I think he would agree, I witnessed God's Majesty. With Steve's Corolla loaded to the max, we left Jerome on Saturday morning and arrived in Anchorage at 10pm ADT on Tuesday. What happened in the 3024 miles in between will be difficult to fully transcribe here, but hopefully you will get a little taste of what we experienced. It seemed that everytime the road would take another turn, there would be another fantastic scene in front of us like the picture above. I took so many pictures out the front window, bugs would seem to target our windshield just to get in the next picture.  On the third day traveling through northern Alberta, Northeastern BC, and Yukon we saw 13 bears. After a while we wouldn't even slow down, "Oh, it's another bear, ho hum". Except for this guy!

    Alaska2010 135

This was the only Grizzly we saw as all the others were Black Bear. However, unlike the Black Bears, that were rather camera shy, this guy wanted to get closer. Now you might be asking why there's a pop bottle behind him; it wasn't Steven trying to get him to stand up, I have no idea. We're only about 12 feet away in this picture, and inside the car!  We saw so many animals, Buffalo, Red Fox, Bald Eagles, Bighorn Sheep, Caribou, Elk, Deer, Moose, many times they were right on the road a million miles from anywhere!

At the entrance to Banff Nat. Park

    Alaska2010 104

These Caribou were just some of the many we saw.  The highway was in pretty good shape until we got further North.  Frost heaves were plentiful, testing the shocks and our b__ts.  We couldn't have had better weather the entire time, highs in the 60's and 70's and only used the wipers about 5 minutes and that was in Montana.  The second day we drove through Banff and Jasper Nat. Parks and the Icefields Highway. We stopped at the still frozen over Lake Louise and also took a snowcoach ride on a glacier with a long name I don't remember.  The next picture is taken on our way out of Jasper Nat. Park looking South.

After traveling through Idaho, Montana, Alberta, British Columbia, and Yukon, we made it to Alaska!

    Alaska2010 172

The next picture was taken between Tok and Anchorage.

    Alaska2010 190

We visited Matinuska Glacier about two hours Northeast of Anchorage. This was an unbelievable experience, walking on a glacier.  The next picures are only two of the dozens that I took while exploring.  Steven is in the second picture being dwarfed by a giant cravass.

The next picture is the reason for the trip, Alaska Eye Clinic, Anchorage, AK.  Steve will be working here and at another clinic in Wasilla for the next three months. We drove through Wasilla and asked somebody where Gov. Palin lived. This local was really reluctant to tell us and actually didn't; they try to protect her privacy.

  • Killdeer nest!

Today is a work day outside for Dad.  He's out mowing the non-lawn parts of our property.  We call it our "back 40".  I went out to give him a drink like a good little wife, and then I noticed a killdeer bird.  They are so wonderfully created to have this God given instinct to protect their nest and eggs.  He started squaking like crazy and when I got real close, he (or she) started running away and flopped over on his or her side like he was injured.  Then I knew I was close.  And because I didn't want dad to mow over the nest, I persisted in really looking hard for it.  And found it!!!

    001

Here they are.  Pretty well hidden, huh? Right on the ground.  I'm excited I found it!

    003

He's trying to get me to "get away from my eggs!"

    005

They'll be safe now!  I pointed the nest out to Dad and he mowed a wide circle around the nest so he knew the area to avoid.  Good job, honey!

  • Visiting Forest Grove and Olympia

We traveled to the Northwest to help Steven move and to visit our Oly family.  A very nice weekend. The flowering bushes and trees are absolutely beautiful this time of the year up there and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the colors and variety.  My favorite is the dogwood.  Spectacular!

    003

    001

On Saturday we took in a Mariners game. The Mariners lost, but it was fun being together.  I think I did more grand-kid watching than watching the game.  I sure love those kids.

  • Springtime Camping in the Wind!

This weekend we went camping at Three Island State Park in Glenns Ferry, about an hour away, right between us and Boise, near where Aaron & Serena live.  It was the first time we camped here.  We had intended to leave on Friday but it was tooooo windy!  A steady 40 mph w/ gusts in the mid 50's.  Not exactly safe for pulling a trailer and it would even have been against the wind!  So we waited till the next day.  It was still windy, but not as bad! Here are a few pictures of our time together.

We visited the Visitors Center/Museum about the Oregon Trail crossing of the Snake River that was done virtually 100 yards from the museum.

    001

    002

    003

    004

Our camping spot was nice.  This is a nice campground. We had never camped with full hookups before with this trailer.  In fact since we've been camping, we've had full hookups only 1 time in the 22 years or so we've been camping!  Wow!  It was exciting!  :)  Too civilized for John however :D

    005

    006

All meals had to be eaten inside because of the wind.  Aaron & John actually golfed Sat. afternoon at a course which actually was very near the campsite.

We only had a very brief campfire, (to satisfy a promise to Dillon) then scurried in to the warmth and calm of our trailer. We went to a Baptist Church on Sun. morning after a world famous French Toast breakfast from Dad.   In all, it was a very nice, but brief time!

Then the next day we went with  Kristin and Steven to the coast. It was a beautiful day with not a lot of wind.

    4-13-10 033

Evidence of a history of a lot of wind, however!  Love that tree!

    4-13-10 036

    4-13-10 038

    We took a frisbee along.
